Heating system care and power flushing in
Rochester
What is power flushing?
POWER FLUSHING
Power flushing, or system flushing, is simply the
process of forcing cleansing water at high
velocity through a heating system. The water is
pumped through at low pressure to ensure that
no physical damage is caused to the system.
The aim of the process is to remove the sludge
and corrosion deposits which can cause
circulation problems or boiler noise problems
and hence restore the heating system to
optimum operation.

Power flushing can be used very effectively to
pre-commission clean a newly installed heating
system because it removes the grease and oil
used by the manufacturers to prevent rusting of
components before use as well as any excess
flux, swarf and other debris present in the
system.
New installations
Because the design of modern high efficiency
and compact boilers makes them more
susceptible to problems caused by debris in the
system water, it’s prudent to power flush out the
sludge and debris which may have built up in an
existing heating system immediately before
fitting a new boiler. This will go a long way
towards preventing or minimising possible future
problems and boiler breakdowns.
Existing installations
Many heating systems, particularly those which
have been around for many years, will be found
to contain sludge and corrosion even if no flow
problems have yet become apparent.
Sludge and debris which has gradually built up in
an existing system can often be disturbed by
alterations or additions to a heating system or its
piping as well as by the increased efficiency of a
new boiler. Once mobilised, this debris may
accumulate in the boiler’s heat exchanger where
it can cause noisy operation and reduced
efficiency. In extreme circumstances, it can even
cause failure of the boiler.
